Rapid ROSAT Observations of small Gamma-Ray Burst Error Boxes
نویسنده
چکیده
I summarize the use of the ROSAT satellite over the last months for the investigation of well localized GRB error boxes. In particular, I report about the attempts for and results of quick follow-up observations (including the GRBs localized with BeppoSAX and RXTE) with ROSAT with its capability to achieve 10 locations of X-ray afterglow sources.

Gamma-Ray Bursts with ROSAT
I review the use of ROSAT over the last years for the investigation of well localized gamma-ray burst (GRB) error boxes. In particular, I cover (i) the systematic study of several dozens of IPN locations using the ROSAT All-Sky-Survey data, (ii) results of deep ROSAT pointings of selected small GRB error boxes, (iii) the attempts for and results of quick follow-up observations after GRB events ...
متن کاملSnapshot Identification of Gamma Ray Burst Optical Afterglows
Gamma ray burst afterglows can be identified in single epoch observations using three or more optical filters. This method relies on color measurements to distinguish the power law spectrum of an afterglow from the curved spectra of stars. Observations in a fourth filter will further distinguish between afterglows and most galaxies up to redshifts z ≈ 1. By allowing faster identification of opt...
متن کاملA Statistical Treatment of the Gamma-ray Burst “no Host Galaxy” Problem: I. Methodology
If gamma-ray bursts originate in galaxies at cosmological distances, the host galaxy should be detected if a burst error box is searched deep enough; are the host galaxies present? We present and implement a statistical methodology which evaluates whether the observed galaxy detections in a burst’s error box are consistent with the presence of the host galaxy, or whether all the detections can ...
متن کاملA Search for X-ray Counterparts of Gamma-ray Bursts with the Rosat Pspc
We search for faint X-ray bursts with duration 10–300 seconds in the ROSAT PSPC pointed observations with a total exposure of 1.6×107 s. We do not detect any events shorter than ∼ 100 s, i.e. those that could be related to the classic gamma-ray bursts (GRB). At the same time, we detect a number of long flares with durations of several hundred seconds. Most, but not all, of the long flares are a...
متن کاملThe Soft X–ray Afterglow of Gamma Ray Bursts, a Stringent Test for the Fireball Model
I consider the recent discovery of a soft X–ray source inside the error box of the gamma ray burst GB 960720 by the SAX, ASCA and ROSAT satellites, in terms of the fireball model. I show that the ejecta shell, which, after causing the burst is cold and dense, but still relativistic, keeps plowing through the interstellar medium, heating up the just–shocked matter which then emits X–rays. I comp...
